Review of Tom Theabo / Janet Planet Shows in NYC
Time Well Spent with Janet Planet
Janet's well-controlled laser beam of a voice commands attention whether used in pianissimo mode (often, and often just so right) or hopscotching around the scale as she interacts with the musicians. She's worked with her simpatico and thoughtdul guitarist / musical director Tom Theabo for just over 30 years, but their joy in making music together looks like anything but automatic pilot. Drummer Ross Pederson, who never overplays, is not only inventive and attentive, but radiates great pleasure in small and explosive musical moments. Bassist Dan Loomis is a great fit for the group, up for the challenges and variety, and an integral part of the art and architecture.
